Intimacy With God Series | More of God Every Day | Brad Huebert - March 22, 2026
Many of us long to experience more of God, but don’t know where to start. Trying harder is not the solution! God reveals himself to us in three basic ways: Through His presence, His voice, and His work. Each of these expressions flow into the others; in other words, when we tune into His presence, His voice and work open up to us naturally. Each of these expressions are ‘entry points,’ and God seems to like to switch between them. Once we understand this, we’re much better able to tune in to whatever God is revealing.
The first way we experience God is through His presence. God is everywhere—omnipresent—but we can only experience Him in time, space, and place, because that's where we live! In Exodus 3:1-4, Moses experienced a manifestation of the presence of God. We read that “when the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush.” Focusing on God’s presence led directly to Moses hearing God’s voice, which kick-started God’s work through His unique calling. The same can be true for us.
The second way we experience God is through His voice. “For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it” (Job 33:14). It’s helpful to understand that God doesn’t just speak, He communicates. This communication comes through words, pictures, logic, intuition, and even the physical world. The prophet Samuel’s ministry was kickstarted by hearing God’s voice in I Samuel chapter 3. We read that “Samuel did not yet know the Lord; the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.” Samuel didn’t perceive God’s voice, even when it arrived audibly. When Eli clued him in to what was going on, “The Lord came and stood there” with Him, and Gods’ work was also activated in His life. In other words, noticing God’s voice led to an experience of His presence and His work.
The third way we experience God is through His work—through what He’s doing around us. In John 21, a resurrected Jesus “came and stood on the shore” (manifesting His presence) while His disciples were out fishing, but they "didn’t realize it was Jesus” (John 21:4). When He asked them “Haven’t you any fish?” (21:5, His voice), they still didn’t clue in. Only when Christ’s work exploded around them in a miraculous catch of fish did John exclaim, “It’s the Lord!” (21:7). After this realization about His work, they all experienced more of His presence and voice.
Tuning in to God’s presence, voice, and work is not optional. It’s the heart of what it means to walk with Him. We must learn to be looking for all three, because God often shifts where He begins with us. We need to start with the biblical truths that God is present, He is speaking, and He is working… and live like it. Wherever God begins will lead to the other two expressions, so we need to learn to go with what He’s giving. Let’s become a people who are sensitive to what God is doing and saying, so we can ‘dive right in’ like Peter did when He realized Jesus was on the beach, waiting for His response.
