FOLLOW ME - The Call to Discipleship
When Jesus called His first disciples, He extended a simple yet life-changing invitation: “Follow Me.”
These two words capture the very heart of discipleship. Jesus wasn't merely inviting people to believe certain truths about Him, attend religious gatherings, or add Him to their existing lives. He was calling them into a new relationship, identity, way of life, and mission.
The question for each of us is not simply, “Do I believe in Jesus?” but “Am I actually following Him?”
When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, Scripture tells us they immediately left their nets and followed Him (Matthew 4:20). Their nets represented their livelihood, security, familiarity, and everything they had built their lives around.
Following Jesus required them to leave something behind.
The same is true for us today. Our “nets” may be our comfort, ambitions, habits, relationships, or desire for control. Sometimes they are simply familiar ways of doing things that prevent us from embracing what God wants to do next.
As individuals and as a church, we cannot fully follow Jesus into a new season while insisting on holding onto everything from the past.
Jesus takes this invitation even further in Luke 9:23:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Discipleship isn't simply about self-improvement; it's about self-surrender. It means laying down our own agendas and allowing Jesus to become Lord over every area of our lives. And this surrender is not a one-time decision, but a daily commitment.
Yet Jesus' invitation also carries a wonderful promise: “I will make you fishers of men.”
As we follow Him, He transforms us and gives our lives Kingdom purpose. We are called not only to become more like Jesus, but also to help others discover and follow Him.
This week, take some time to prayerfully consider three questions:
Am I truly following Jesus, or merely believing in Him?
What am I still holding onto that He is asking me to surrender?
Where is Jesus asking me to follow Him today?
Church family, Jesus is still calling ordinary people like you and me to follow Him. May our response always be a wholehearted YES!
Let's leave our nets behind, take up our cross daily, and follow Him wherever He leads!
